One- and Two-Day Smoke School Lecture
Please refer to smoke school class page for details on start times.
Some classes may NOT have a lecture component.
The lecture is focused on the essential requirements of the Method with a brief review of the history, science and legal aspects. The majority of the lecture focuses on the how to perform a Method 9 reading and properly document the results. Times are approximate.
History of Visible Emissions and Air Pollution Control 15 minutes
A brief history of visible emissions control in the United States.
Legal Aspects of Visible Emissions Use and Certification 15 minutes
Discussion about why accurate visible emissions readings are so important. We cover the advantages and limitations of visible emission readings. We provide resources regarding Method 22, Method 203A, 203B, and 203C, and the use of cameras.
Theory and Science 25 minutes
This lays the foundation of understanding Method 9 and explains the statistics, physics of light scattering and other factors that affect emission observations.
Break 10 minutes
Method 9 Observation Form 45 minutes
Using the form provided, attendees will complete a visible emission observation form (VEO form). We will discuss the how and why of the data and how to obtain the data. Included is a detailed demonstration of tools which may be used to collect the required information. In this discussion, we cover water vapor plumes in brief, special reading problems, and the how, why and when to correct for a slant angle.
Lecture Test
The lecture test will document that the attendee has obtained the information needed to understand and pass their certification.
Certification Procedure 15 minutes
The lecture section wraps up with the certification process video as the instructor grades lecture tests and issues certificates for attendance at the lecture. The attendees learn what to expect during field certification.
Upon completion of the Lecture the attendee should be able to perform reliable Method 22 Observations and in conjunction with the certification be able to completely document Method 9 observations as well.
