Whether you're attending smoke school for the first time or returning for recertification, proper preparation makes the difference between a smooth, efficient experience and unnecessary delays. While EPA Method 9 certification requirements remain rigorous regardless of the training provider, the process itself has evolved significantly through digital technology.
At Compliance Assurance Associates, Inc. (CAA), our patented digital certification process eliminates the biggest frustration of traditional smoke school: waiting times. No waiting to sign in. No waiting for manual grading. No delays from human errors in paperwork. No waiting days or weeks for your certificate to arrive in the mail. With our digital system, certificates are issued electronically upon successful completion of testing.
Even with streamlined digital certification, preparation remains essential for success. Here's what you need to know before arriving at smoke school.
Getting Ready for Smoke School
Enrollment
If you are not the designated contact for your organization, you will be enrolled in smoke school by the designated contact. You will receive a confirmation email from CAA that includes:
- Your student record number – this is important!
- School information – date, time, location
- A link to CAA's webpage that provides smoke school preparation information
Keep Your Student Record Number Handy
Your CAA student record number is your key to quick sign-in at smoke school and accessing your certification history and digital certificates. You'll find it in your enrollment confirmation email or can retrieve it anytime from our student record lookup page.
Have this number ready when class starts for faster sign-in.
Understanding CAA's Digital Certification Process
Traditional smoke schools still rely on paper forms, clipboards, and pens for recording opacity readings during field certification. Students juggle paperwork in whatever weather conditions exist that day, including wind blowing forms off clipboards and rain making paper illegible.
CAA's patented digital field certification process eliminates all of that. You'll use a mobile device with a simple, intuitive interface to record your opacity readings. The system provides:
- No-contact sign-in and testing - Streamlined check-in process reduces wait times and physical paperwork handling
- No paper or pens required - Your opacity readings are recorded directly on the mobile device, eliminating transcription errors and weather-related documentation problems
- Simple user interface - The app is designed specifically for Method 9 testing, so you can focus on opacity readings rather than navigating complicated forms
- Cloud storage - Test run data, certification history, and Method 9 certificates are automatically stored and accessible from anywhere
- Immediate results - No waiting days or weeks for your certificate to arrive by mail - it's available digitally as soon as you pass
The EPA Method 9 requirements haven't changed - you're still reading real smoke from an actual smoke generator, still meeting the same accuracy standards. CAA's digital certification has modernized how those readings are recorded and how your certification is documented.
What to Bring to Smoke School
Coming prepared with the right items ensures you can focus on certification rather than scrambling for forgotten essentials. Here's what you need:
Required Items
Mobile device - Make sure your device is fully charged and has adequate battery life for 4-6 hours of field testing. CAA will provide mobile devices to those students who need them.
Mobile device charger - Bring your charger and keep it accessible. While testing doesn't typically drain batteries completely, it's better to have it available than risk running out of power mid-certification.
Prescription eyewear if needed - If you wear glasses or contacts for normal vision correction, bring them. You must be able to see clearly at the required viewing distance (typically 45-175 feet).
Important: The use of sunglasses is not recommended during opacity readings, as they can affect your perception of the smoke's appearance.
Recommended Items
Stylus for input on the device, if preferred - Some students find a stylus more comfortable than using their finger on the touchscreen, especially during extended testing periods. This is optional, but can improve your experience.
Keep-screen-alive app - Apps like Wakey for Android or Awake for iOS prevent your screen from timing out during testing. This eliminates the distraction of repeatedly unlocking your device between opacity readings.
Chair and umbrella for shade - Field certification takes place outdoors, and you may be standing or sitting for several hours. A portable chair makes the experience more comfortable.
Weather-appropriate clothing - Check the forecast and dress in layers. You'll be outdoors for the duration of field certification, so prepare for sun, wind, precipitation, or temperature changes. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes - you may be standing on uneven ground near the smoke generator.
Water and snacks - Stay hydrated and maintain your energy throughout the testing process. Certification can take 4-6 hours depending on group size and weather conditions.
Backup Items
Clipboard and pen - While CAA's digital process means you won't need paper forms, bringing a clipboard and pen as backup provides peace of mind. They'll be used only if the digital process can't be used for an unexpected reason - which is extremely rare.
Day of Arrival: What to Expect
Digital Check-In Process
Arrive at the designated smoke school location at the scheduled start time. The digital check-in process is streamlined and efficient - you'll confirm your student record number, verify your contact information, and receive any final instructions about the day's schedule.
CAA uses a no-contact sign-in system; the process moves quickly even with larger groups. There's no waiting in line to manually fill out forms or hand over paperwork.
Field Certification Testing
The actual Method 9 certification test remains unchanged by technology - you observe smoke plumes generated by a controlled smoke generator and estimate their opacity. What has changed is how you record those observations.
Instead of marking paper forms with a pen, you enter your opacity estimates directly into the mobile device. The interface is intuitive - you'll see the plume number and simply input your percentage estimate. No fumbling with clipboards, no weather-damaged forms, no illegible handwriting causing scoring disputes.
You'll complete practice runs before your official certification attempt. These help you calibrate your reading techniques and get comfortable with both the smoke reading process and the digital recording interface. Most students feel significantly more confident after one or two practice sessions.
For the actual certification test, you'll observe 50 smoke plumes total - 25 white smoke and 25 black smoke. The mobile device guides you through each reading systematically. Your data is automatically saved and backed up to cloud storage in real time, so there's no risk of losing your test results.
Grading
Grading is performed digitally, thereby reducing the time it takes for humans to evaluate and tally results. You will be notified via your mobile device if you passed the run or have to try again. Once you have completed field certification, the digital app will ask you to take a selfie and enter your signature on the device. At that point, you are certified and will receive an email notification with your certificate. No waiting for a paper certificate.
We will cover what data is stored in your certificate and how your certification renewal process is handled in a subsequent post.
