Michigan Visible Emissions / Opacity Standard
The opacity limit for Michigan is 20% opacity (6-min avg); one 6-min average per hour up to 27% allowed, as established under Mich. Admin. Code R 336.1301(1)(a) (Rule 301).
Compliance is demonstrated via EPA Method 9 (R 336.2004(4)); specific methods for steel/coke oven operations (R 336.2030–2032).
Averaging period: 6-minute average; one exceedance up to 27% per hour; water vapor exceedances not violations
Michigan's 27% single-period exception is unique — most states use 40% for the exception period. Michigan EGLE has Michigan-specific reference test methods (9A, 9B, 9C) for certain industrial processes. Compliance graded per R 336.1303.
