In-Person or VR Smoke School - Which is Right for You?
If your organization requires EPA Method 9 certified visible emission observers, you have two paths to certification: traditional in-person smoke school or virtual reality (VR) smoke school. Both deliver the same EPA-recognized Method 9 certification. The difference is in how your team gets there.
Compliance Assurance Associates, Inc. (CAA) offers both options — in-person smoke schools across the country and VirtualOpacity®, our EPA-approved VR certification platform. Choosing the right format depends on your organization’s size, locations, scheduling needs, and budget.
What’s the Difference Between In-Person and VR Smoke School?
In-person smoke school takes place at a scheduled location where students observe live smoke plumes generated by a smoke generator. CAA’s in-person schools use a patented digital field certification process — students record their opacity readings on a mobile device rather than paper forms, and receive their certification electronically upon successful completion. In-person smoke schools are available in a public session format or a private format with training on your site.
VR smoke school replaces the smoke generator and outdoor setting with a virtual reality headset. Students observe simulated smoke plumes and record their opacity readings through the VR interface. The certification process is completed entirely through the headset, from any location with an internet connection.
Both formats follow EPA Method 9 requirements and produce the same certification.
How Do I Decide Which Format Is Best?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right choice depends on several factors specific to your organization. Here are the key questions to consider:
How Many Employees Need Certification?
For organizations with a small number of readers in one location, attending a nearby in-person smoke school may be the simplest option. For larger teams — especially those spread across multiple facilities or states — VR can significantly reduce the logistics of getting everyone certified on a six-month cycle.
How Important Is Scheduling Flexibility?
Coordinating work coverage, booking travel, and working through bad weather conditions are familiar frustrations for organizations relying on in-person smoke school.
VirtualOpacity is available 24/7. Employees can certify on their own schedule, any day of the year, regardless of weather. For organizations where pulling multiple people off the job on the same day is difficult, this flexibility can be a deciding factor.
What Are Your Travel Costs?
In-person smoke school requires travel to the school location. Depending on where your employees are based, that could mean flights, hotels, rental cars, and multiple days away from work.
With VR certification, travel is eliminated entirely. Students certify from their own facility or even from home. For organizations with employees in remote locations or spread across a wide geographic area, the travel savings alone can make VR the more cost-effective option.
Does Weather Affect Your Operations?
In-person smoke schools take place outdoors, and students must work through whatever weather conditions exist that day — rain, wind, extreme heat, or cold. Unfavorable conditions can make the experience uncomfortable and may affect performance.
VR certification is completely weather-independent. If staying on schedule with your six-month renewal cycle is critical, VR removes that variable.
Do Your Employees Have Access to VR Headsets?
VirtualOpacity requires an approved VR headset for each student. Organizations choosing the VR smoke school format will need to purchase headsets for their team. For organizations certifying a large number of employees on an ongoing basis, the headset investment pays for itself through reduced travel and scheduling costs. For smaller teams, the upfront headset cost is worth weighing against in-person school fees and travel expenses.
Consider First-Time Certification vs. Recertification
Some organizations prefer in-person training for employees who have never attended smoke school before, as it provides a hands-on introduction to the process with an instructor present. VR is a natural fit for recertification, where experienced readers already understand the fundamentals and simply need to complete their six-month renewal efficiently.
That said, VirtualOpacity is fully approved for both initial certification and recertification. The VR platform offers built-in practice sessions so first-time students can get oriented before their official test.
Can I Use Both Smoke School Formats?
Absolutely. Many organizations use a combination of both formats depending on the situation. For example, you might send new employees to in-person smoke school for their initial certification, then use VirtualOpacity for subsequent six-month renewals. Or you might use in-person schools for employees near a scheduled location and VR for employees in remote areas.
CAA manages certification records for both formats in the same system, so there’s no administrative complexity in mixing the two.
How Do the Costs Compare?
The direct cost of certification varies depending on format and group size. However, the total cost of certification goes beyond the enrollment fee. Consider:
- Travel expenses (flights, hotels, rental cars, meals)
- Lost productivity (days away from work)
- Coverage costs (covering shifts while employees are at training)
- Weather-related delays or certifying under unfavorable weather conditions
- Headset investment (for VR)
For many organizations, VR certification has a lower total cost per employee when travel and lost productivity are factored in — even with the headset purchase.
What Do I Need Before Getting Started with Either Smoke School Format?
Regardless of which format you choose, all students must have a lecture certification on file before completing field certification for the first time. CAA’s self-paced online lecture covers opacity and visible emission fundamentals and can be paired with either format.
For in-person smoke school, you’ll need:
- A mobile device (fully charged) for CAA’s digital field certification process
- A mobile device charger
- Prescription eyewear if applicable (no sunglasses during testing)
- Weather-appropriate clothing, water, and a chair for extended outdoor testing
- Your CAA student record number for sign-in
